The system failed.
The people were let down because of a corrupt system.
The High Priests who were met to help people be in relationship with God became selfish, privileged, elite and evil. People were being deceived and robbed by those who held the knowledge and therefore held the power.
This is the cultural climate that Jesus steps into.
‘For this reason he (Jesus) had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.‘
Jesus fills the void left by selfish leaders. Jesus interjects with the selflessness that the High Priests were meant to exhibit but had forgotten their responsibilities; Jesus chooses to serve.
Through Jesus mercy is reestablished.
Through Jesus living by faith rather than by rules is reinforced.
But most importantly through Jesus atonement is the priority once again for the people who want to be friends with God.
What does atonement mean? Atonement means a reparation or expiation for sin. But I believe a more simpler way of describing atonement is found in the actual word … at-one-ment.
Jesus made it possible for us to be in unity with God once again, to be at one with the Heavenly Father; what a tremendous gift that Jesus has gifted us with.
Where the system failed Jesus triumphed, where the people were robbed Jesus brought restoration!
TODAY is your faith and trust in Jesus? Is Jesus the great High Priest in your life that brings atonement between you and God?
Lord, thank you. What an amazing gift to be at-one-ment with God once again because of your selflessness and sacrifice, we are blessed. Amen.
