‘See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness’ Hebrews 3:12-13
What is the sign of someone who is need of encouragement? They are breathing!
Encouragement is not something that I am great; it isn’t one of my core strengths but there are some people who just naturally encourage others, make them feel important, welcomed and loved. These are awesome people, who I try to learn a lot from daily.
The encouragement being describe in the above passage is a little more specific than just telling someone they are great or that they can do anything; its deeper and more challenging then that.
The encouragement is towards those that are allowing an unbelieving heart that is turning away from God; this encouragement is not always a back pat but can be more truthful and potentially harsh.
Following God is not simple, not easy and not always smooth; there are many battles and struggles that we must face and there are plenty of times we may be tempted to harden our hearts towards God and choose our own path.
That’s why we need community; we need each other.
Those that will speak truth, out of love, into our hearts to continue on following God and seeking His Kingdom first.
Lord, give us true words to pray for one another. Burden our hearts with shared sorrows, and delight our spirits with mutual joy. Let genuine love provoke in us words of blessing and encouragement. Amen.
