‘The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and instruction.’
Fear does not sound like a quality that should be in any relationship.
If you heard anyone say that they were marrying another out of fear, you would feel the need to talk to them, express concern, maybe even a desire to bring some more qualified people into the conversation.
Fear feels like the wrong word and yet fear is the word that our author uses in regards to our relationship with God; it’s the starting point and the beginning of knowledge.
So what does fear actually mean? Are we meant to be afraid of God?
The fear of God is not a matter of wanting to stay away from God who is fearful, or of being afraid of what God might do to us; it is a matter of understanding God’s claim on us, that he wants us to belong to him in a relationship where we honour and follow in obedience. It is rightly viewing God, acknowledging his greatness, superiority and awesomeness above all other things.
Are you willing to submit yourself to God’s claim on your life?
Are you willing to be in relationship where you fear, respect, worship & follow?
There is a blessing that comes with fear … knowledge.
Knowledge means information and facts, it means knowing God better; who he actually is. The opposite to this is being a fool that despises wisdom and instruction; so it really comes down to the reality of whether we are going to live with a level of fear or whether we are going to live the life of a fool.
TODAY check your heart, do you truly fear the Lord?
