Proverbs 1:8-19

“Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction
and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
They are a garland to grace your head
and a chain to adorn your neck.
My son, if sinful men entice you,
do not give in to them.
If they say, “Come along with us;
let’s lie in wait for innocent blood,
let’s ambush some harmless soul;
let’s swallow them alive, like the grave,
and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
we will get all sorts of valuable things
and fill our houses with plunder;
cast lots with us;
we will all share the loot ”—
my son, do not go along with them,
do not set foot on their paths;
for their feet rush into evil,
they are swift to shed blood.
How useless to spread a net
where every bird can see it!
These men lie in wait for their own blood;
they ambush only themselves!
Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain;
it takes away the life of those who get it.”

Proverbs 1:8-19

I’ve got three principles for you that come from the verse above, three things that the author of Proverbs would like for us to apply to our lives.

(1) TRUE SUCCESS comes from doing the good things that we have been taught to do.

We must learn to practice what we have learnt, this is the difference between knowledge & understanding, two qualities that are promised to us through the book of Proverbs. Knowledge is information and knowledge but understanding is the ability to properly apply the knowledge that we have learnt.

(2) There will always be people who ENCOURAGE YOU TO DO WRONG by offering profit or blessing from doing those wrong things.

“If they say, “Come along with us;
let’s lie in wait for innocent blood,
let’s ambush some harmless soul;
let’s swallow them alive, like the grave,
and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
we will get all sorts of valuable things
and fill our houses with plunder;
cast lots with us;
we will all share the loot ”

(3) The PATH OF WRONGDOING always leads to the destruction of those following the path.

These men lie in wait for their own blood;
they ambush only themselves!
Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain;
it takes away the life of those who get it.”

The final destination is the same for all who avoid fearing the Lord and pursuing their own gain; it’s the fools peril. We have a better promise, one that involves success by gaining wisdom; that is what God wants for you!

TODAY take time to reflect on these three truths and try to observe them throughout your day.
